David Thomas (1794-1882) was a Pennsylvania iron manufacturer who introduced into the United States the use of anthracite coal in the manufacture of pig iron. The papers consist of twenty-eight letters received by Thomas between May 1839 and 1842. They contain important new information on one of the textbook examples of nineteenth century technology transfer.

Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours (1771–1834) was a French American chemist and industrialist who founded the gunpowder manufacturer E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. E.I. du Pont married Sophie Dalmas du Pont (1775-1828) in 1791; the couple had eight children, one of whom died in infancy. This collection of papers includes outbound and inbound correspondence covering personal and business matters. These include personal accounts, writings and memoirs, legal documents, and miscellany, of which the majority are accounts. There are papers of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. that date from 1802 to 1850 and include correspondence (drafts, retained copies, and letters received), contracts and other legal documents, accounts, bills and receipts, checks, promissory notes, bills of exchange, drafts, and certain miscellaneous notes and memoranda.

Henry A. Janvier (1861-1952) was an engineer with the Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, New Jersey, where he had begun work in 1877 as a sixteen-year-old apprentice. Sometime in 1896, Ferracute signed a contract with the Chinese government to build three mints there, two at Wuchang in Hopei Province and one in Chengtu in Szechwan. Janvier served as chief engineer for the project. This collection includes Janvier's letters to his family, in which he describes his 1897 trip to China.

Joshua Gilpin (1765-1841) was a merchant and paper manufacturer. The papers consist of copies of four typescript letters written to Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), a British engineer from Joshua Gilpin.

William Sellers & Co. was an iron works that manufactured machine tools used for turning, planing, shaping, drilling, boring, or cutting metal or wood. The company was founded in 1848 as Bancroft & Sellers by mechanical engineers and inventors Edward Bancroft (1811-1855) and William Sellers (1824-1905). The records consist of five volumes, as well as correspondence from William Sellers and the Sellers firm.
